I read on MuggleNet earlier that some Georgia woman is having a previously dismissed case reheard(?) by the Gwinnett Board of Education. (news link)

Basically, this mother, Laura Mallory, campaigned to have the Harry Potter books removed from her children’s school library. Why?

Because they “promote and glorify witchcraft.” …ooooh brother

After the Board dismissed the case, the woman appealed their decision and the stupid Board has decided to give her another shot by listening to her case again on October 3rd.

Honestly woman, what sort of new things are you going to bring up? “Not only does Harry Potter promote Witchcraft, but it also distracts my kids from watching Elmo and Barney on TV!”

I would like to ask this woman how she feels about her kids being forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. I mean, it has a blatant “under God” line written into to it… ::GASP:: …my goodness, what must the non-christians think?!?!!

…on a side note… the pledge was written in 1892 (or so) by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and Christian Socialist. At the time, he didn’t write the words “under God” into the pledge because he never thought to.

Here’s the original Pledge:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

When Congress had the words added to the Pledge in 1954, Bellamy’s son asked them not to do it as his father would not have wanted it in there. Like the father of the US Constitution, James Madison, both felt a strongly in the separation of church and state. That is one reason why Madison left out the word “God” in the Constitution.

So, now back to the topic….

This mom wants to exclude ONE set of books because of it’s portrayal of a religion that probably is the basis for her own? Friggin’ attention whore….

It’s too bad I’m not a resident of Georgia….else I might have shown up at that hearing to give that lady a piece of my mind.

Blarrrrgh!

I guess American’s are too lazy to spout the words “Impeachment” nowadays…..or maybe they just reserve that word for Presidents that lie to us about getting a lil’ sumthin’ on the side.

Sure….it all makes sense…..getting head from your secretary is SOOOO much worse than sending thousands of kids off to their unwarranted deaths. :o \

Buck Fush.

I read an article in the NY Times yesterday about how the Bush Administration is going to have to explain why they think they can override and ignore laws next week. In a nutshell, the President is breaking more world records again…..this time it is abot the use of “signing statements” (memos that reserve the right to ignore laws if the president thinks they impinge on his authority).

According to the article, the Bush Administration has signed at least 750 of these memos since taking office in 2001. So, not only has he taken more vacations than any other President in history….he now has the record of signing the most of these memos than all the past Presidents in America’s history COMBINED!

How lovely a thought….this man can override any law stating that Gays/Lesbians can marry, that 8 years in office isn’t long enough, that writing negative comments about him isn’t free speech, etc….etc.

Unfortunately, the man bringing this investigation against the BA doesn’t think that they will stop using “signing statements”, but he hopes to get them to stop using them so much.

Some forums I have read contain Bush supporters comparing his record to that of the “great” Abraham Lincoln…cherished forefather of our nation. Here’s such a comparison:

-Criticized for violating the Constitution
-Accused of abusing executive power
-Refused to compromise with the South on slavery
-Declared martial law
-Suspended habeas corpus
-War was called illegal
-Ordered 18,000 rebel leaders, public officials, and reporters arrested and held in military prisons without trial
-Lincoln was held responsible for the deaths of the hundreds of thousands of soldiers that lost their lives

…and they mean to use such comparison’s to defend Bush’s actions.

um….did they forget that Lincoln was ASSASSINATED??!?!? I suppose that they want to just pick the parts they like…..like most other God-fearing people do.

oh well….rant over…gotta get ready for work.
