S.M.I.G. – Stupid Mother In Georgia
I read on MuggleNet earlier that some Georgia woman is having a previously dismissed case reheard(?) by the Gwinnett Board of Education. (news link)
Basically, this mother, Laura Mallory, campaigned to have the Harry Potter books removed from her children’s school library. Why?
Because they “promote and glorify witchcraft.” …ooooh brother
After the Board dismissed the case, the woman appealed their decision and the stupid Board has decided to give her another shot by listening to her case again on October 3rd.
Honestly woman, what sort of new things are you going to bring up? “Not only does Harry Potter promote Witchcraft, but it also distracts my kids from watching Elmo and Barney on TV!”
I would like to ask this woman how she feels about her kids being forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. I mean, it has a blatant “under God” line written into to it… ::GASP:: …my goodness, what must the non-christians think?!?!!
…on a side note… the pledge was written in 1892 (or so) by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and Christian Socialist. At the time, he didn’t write the words “under God” into the pledge because he never thought to.
Here’s the original Pledge:
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
When Congress had the words added to the Pledge in 1954, Bellamy’s son asked them not to do it as his father would not have wanted it in there. Like the father of the US Constitution, James Madison, both felt a strongly in the separation of church and state. That is one reason why Madison left out the word “God” in the Constitution.
So, now back to the topic….
This mom wants to exclude ONE set of books because of it’s portrayal of a religion that probably is the basis for her own? Friggin’ attention whore….
It’s too bad I’m not a resident of Georgia….else I might have shown up at that hearing to give that lady a piece of my mind.
